You don’t need to burn your DIY website to the ground. You need to stop blaming it for problems it wasn’t built to solve. I had a client who felt like her DIY website was the problem, but what her website really needed was:
clearer messaging
more confidence in her offer
strategy behind the website’s flow
permission to get help from a tech expert
Her website wasn’t broken. She just needed a site that felt aligned with where her business was going, rather than trying to fit a square into a circle (especially on a five-year-old website). Let’s unpack what is really holding you back from showing up online and what isn’t.
The Real Talk About DIY Websites
Many business owners start with a DIY website on an affordable platform, usually because of their budget. And that typically works fine for a few years. But as high-achieving entrepreneurs, you grow, and so does your business. This creates a misalignment between where your current website is and where you want it to go.
The truth is, plenty of thriving businesses start with DIY designs that convert because they are clear, not fancy. In fact, the website isn’t failing; it’s missing a key element: strategy. So before you throw it all out and hire a designer, let’s look at what’s really going on with your DIY website.
3 Reasons Your DIY Website Is Holding You Back (And Why)
When you don’t have a clear website strategy, everything feels just a bit off. Have you ever walked into one of those salons that’s absolutely stunning with neon signs, velvet chairs, aesthetic on point, but something feels… off?
Maybe the staff barely looks up. The front desk is confusing. You’re not sure where to check in, no one offers you water, and suddenly the vibe doesn’t match the Instagram you fell in love with.
It’s not bad—it’s just not great. And you probably won’t rush back to that salon.
That’s what it’s like when a website looks pretty but doesn’t have any real strategy behind it.
It’s got the vibes, but not the flow. No clear call to action. Hard-to-find booking buttons. Zero personality.
Meanwhile, a strategic site?
That’s like a salon that’s not only gorgeous, but makes you feel taken care of from the moment you walk in. You know where to go. What to expect. And the best part? You leave feeling obsessed and excited to tell all of your friends.
Let’s dive into why that feeling might be missing with your DIY website.
Reason 1: You Don’t Have Clear Messaging
I know you offer exceptional services to your clients. The entire experience? Chef’s kiss.
The question is: does your website clearly say who you help and what you want them to do?
Real talk, you have less than 3 seconds to make a first impression on your website. So you gotta make it clear.
If your visitors can’t figure out what to do or who you are, then they are going to bounce from your website. And we don’t want that!
Take some time to ask yourself, “What do I want my website visitors to do when they get to my website?“
Some possible call-to-action ideas are: call now, book an appointment, get a free consultation, or sign up for the email newsletter.
All options are possible, so pick the one that makes the most sense for you and your business.
SOLUTION: MAKE IT CRYSTAL CLEAR WHO YOU HELP AND WHAT YOU WANT YOUR WEBSITE VISITOR TO DO.
Reason 2: You Built for Looks, Not Leads
Building a pretty website looks great. But a pretty website doesn’t = profitable.
I’m all about a good vibe (hello, cute coffee shop! 👏)
But if your website is solely based on aesthetics, you’re confusing your visitors.
For example, your headline says, “Hey girl, I’m so glad you’re here.” But you offer Botox and facials, your website visitors’ brains are going to say, “Wait.. what?”
Again, this goes back to your website’s strategy. Is it clear what purpose your website serves?
I promise, it is not just an online brochure either. In fact, as a website designer, I firmly believe your website can be your best sales tool.
SOLUTION: PUT YOURSELF IN YOUR CLIENT’S SHOES. IS IT OBVIOUS WHAT SERVICES YOU OFFER? IF NOT, ADD THEM TO YOUR HOMEPAGE ASAP.
Reason 3: You’re Overcomplicating the Tech
If technology gives you a major ick don’t worry, you’re not alone.
In fact, most service providers I talk to don’t love technology. And honestly, I don’t think you have to.
But the root cause of your tech overwhelm isn’t about your tech skills. You’re a smart, savvy business owner.
The overwhelm is about a lack of a plan.
Instead of downloading another free trial for a tool that will only consume more of your precious time, let’s come up with a strategic system that works for you. 😉 I wrote this blog post about the five tech tools that I use and love that are worth keeping in your tech stack (coming from a web designer and tech nerd).
SOLUTION: GO THROUGH THE TOOLS YOU HAVE SUBSCRIPTIONS TO AND AUDIT IF THEY ARE WORTH IT FOR YOUR BUSINESS, OR IF YOU CAN PASS ON THEM.
The Strategy That Actually Makes Your Website Work
Now that we’ve gone through the three reasons your DIY website is holding you back, let’s talk about the strategy that actually makes your website work.
I teach health and beauty service providers to ditch tech-overwhelm with my GLOW Framework.
As a former teacher, I love a good acronym for breaking complex ideas into easy-to-understand frameworks. Let’s dive into the GLOW Framework.
Guide: Lead your visitors through the story of what you do and how you can help.
Lead with Strategy: Focus on clear goals—what do you want your site to help you achieve?
Optimize for Mobile: 70% of your clients check your site on the go—make sure it works beautifully on mobile devices.
Without Tech-Overwhelm: Technology should work for you, not stress you out. Use free resources like this blog and YouTube videos to gather information. And if you’re ready, get help from a trusted expert to guide you through tech decisions when you’re not sure of what needs your attention.
Small Fixes That Create Big Results
Let’s go through some quick wins that you can do today:
Simplify your homepage headline.
Add one clear call-to-action button above the fold.
Run your website through a mobile preview.
Swap stock photos that feel “meh” with brand-aligned ones.
Set up a simple booking or inquiry form that connects to your email.
Why This Matters for Health & Beauty Service-Based Businesses
Your clients book you because they feel your vibe before they even meet you.
Your online presence should radiate that same “she gets it” energy.
Because when things feel aligned in your business, you show up more confidently and your business grows with ease.
Rooting for you,
Sarah
